Paparoa National Park’s karst limestone formations are one of the biggest draw-cards of the West Coast. The most famous are the Pancake Rocks at Dolomite Point, Punakaiki. A short 20 minute loop walk through lush native bush leads to the large windswept carpet of harakeke (NZ flax) which tops these amazing rock-stacks. Timber viewing platforms at numerous vantage points offer magnificent views up and down the coast, and of these nature–sculpted forms. Under perfect skies, even Aoraki/Mt Cook can be seen. Keep your camera handy. High tide and a south-westerly swell will send plumes of foam skywards through three blow holes, painting multi-coloured rainbows across the horizon. Less well-known are the Park’s cave-riddled hills, where black-water rafters and cavers explore glow worm studded caves, while above-ground, white-water rafters bounce past bush-clad riverbanks and the rainforest narrow gauge train chugs past film sites from ‘The Lost World’. Just north of Punakaiki, the 30 minute Truman Track leads through virgin forest to the coast, where caves and coves await. More about the West Coast.
