Hokitika

Hokitika’s wide streets, a monument to bygone days, bear testament to the town’s standing as a major settlement during the 1860’s gold rush.  The Gibson Quay Heritage Waterfront, running along the river’s edge, was once the hub of a thriving port, its heritage walk passing 22 historic buildings and sites including the 1908 Carnegie Library.  Today, it’s a port of a different kind, with pilgrimages of campervans stopping to enjoy the essence of the West Coast.  Visitors flock to the ‘Home of Pounamu’ (NZ greenstone/jade), eager to visit the craft shops and watch carvers in action on Tancred and Sewell Streets.  Within easy drive, paddleboat cruises and canoeing trips, scenic flights and heli-tours to the upper reaches of the Alps, mountain biking on forestry and mining trails, and walks and rafting in the Hokitika Gorge, Paparoa National Park, and the Ross historic goldfields provide some local sight-seeing.  A perfect end to the day is a stroll to the Glowworm Dell, on the northern edge of town, where night-time visitors can admire this natural fairyland, its trees traced with pinpoints of light.  Every March, locals celebrate the West Coast’s rugged reputation by hosting the Wildfoods Festival, where some of the country’s most bizarre culinary treats are served up to its 18,000 visitors.      More about the West Coast.
