Day trip to Cape Palliser
Cape Palliser, the southernmost point of the North Island, is punctuated by the candy-striped Cape Palliser Lighthouse. From Martinborough, the road crosses the plains to the shores of Palliser Bay, then follows the surreal coastline south past Ngawi, where ancient tractors stand like sentinels on the beach, waiting to haul local fishing vessels from the sea. Near the Cape, the road is more like a track, but once there you can park the car and climb to the lighthouse for fabulous views. Nearby, keep an eye out for the North Island’s largest permanent colony of fur seals.
Putangirua Pinnacles
One of NZ’s best examples of “badlands erosion”, the dramatic stone-capped columns of the Pinnacles lay at the foot of the Aorangi Ranges, in the Aorangi Forest Park. The pillars, or “hoodoos”, featured in the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy as a backdrop for the Dimholt Rd scenes. Walk the streambed, follow the bush path or, for the best vantage point, take the loop track past the lookout. While on the streambed, beware of falling rocks.
Putangirua Pinnacles Scenic Reserve, 13 km along Cape Palliser Rd past Lake Ferry turn-off.
Fell Locomotive Museum -- Phone: 06 308 9379
