Te Paki Stream

Te Paki Stream meets the Tasman Sea at the north end of Ninety Mile Beach. Famous for its massive sand dunes and shallow driveable streambed, the stream runs through the 7 square kilometre sand dunes of the Te Paki Recreational Reserve.  Tour buses coming from Ninety Mile Beach head upstream into the reserve, rejoining the Cape Reinga road for the final stretch north.  Those with 4WDs can do the same, though it pays to be cautious – do not stop in the stream itself!  Watch where the locals and tour buses are parking and follow suit.  Most independent travellers enter the reserve by car from the main road to Cape Reinga. Public access to the Reserve means you can wander in the dunes, just be sure to leave all gates as you found them.  Climbing the higher dunes affords expansive views down the coast, and an added bonus is to leap or sandboard back down.
