Cresting the hill from the south, the first view of the sand dunes which grace the Hokianga Harbour’s northern shores has a wow factor unsurpassed by any city-scape. This startingly beautiful harbour is steeped in Maori and European history, and unlike the more eastern settlements of Paihia and Russell, there’s little hype here. Stretching inland for 70 kilometres, this safe-haven often shelters dolphins, orca and seals. Its small settlements of Omapere, Opononi, Rawene and Horeke on the southern shores, and Kohukohu on the northern shores have changed little since the nineteen fifties, when Opo the dolphin spent the summer of 1955 entrancing locals and visitors alike with its antics and games. The Twin Coast Discovery Highway passes through all four settlements, crossing the harbour from Rawene to Kohukohu via a regular car ferry, then heading north to Ahipara at the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach.
