The Aupouri Peninsula stretches approximately 100 km to the North from Awanui to Cape Reinga. Although much of the length of the peninsula is only 10km wide, the northern tip widens to 30km, where Cape Reinga, Cape Maria van Dieman, North Cape and the Surville Cliffs cluster and vie for position as the most northerly point of the mainland. While the Surville Cliffs gain this honour by only a few hundred metres over North Cape, Cape Reinga claims the title of New Zealand’s northernmost road. The last few kilometers of road remain unsealed, adding to the desolate feel of the area, even though it is visited by thousands of tourists every year. Below the lighthouse, the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific is a visible zigzag line (tidal race), and is especially dramatic when the seas are stormy. On the cliffs below is a spot of spiritual significance to Māori, who believe that departing souls begin their journey to their homeland, Hawaiki, from here (Te Rerenga Wairua).
