CYCLING AND MOUNTAIN BIKING
The open terrain around Taupo makes it perfect for cycling. Pamphlets detailing cycling tracks around Lake Taupo are available at the local i-SITE, and the blue cycle racks dotted around town ensure cyclists can enjoy peace of mind while in town – provided they bring a lock. There are also over 80kms of purpose cut mountain biking tracks to enjoy, and many shared walking and cycling tracks. Bike hire and guided tours are available, and for thrill seekers heli-biking from highest point in Kaimanawa Ranges, or biking the 46km 42 Traverse (Tongariro Forest Crossing) through State Forest 42 will combine glorious views and testing conditions. Maps of local tracks.
TROUT FISHING
It’s an angler’s delight – over 100 years of wild spawning since the first trout fry were released have ensured that the lake and its tributary rivers teem with rainbow and brown trout. Trout fishing licences are mandatory, and licence restrictions forbid the sale of trout – full details of restrictions are available at DOC. If you want to eat trout, even at a restaurant, you have to catch it yourself – restaurant staff are happy to cook it for you.
Mine Bay rock carvings
Carved by master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell, the major carving is the 10 metre high depiction of Te Arawa tohunga Ngatoroirangi, and is accompanied by two smaller carvings of Celtic design, depicting the south wind and a mermaid. The project began in the late 1970’s, the Ngatoroirangi carving taking four summers to complete. The carvings are accessible only by boat and kayak.
