This historic, picturesque gold mining town sits beside the Arrow River, a twenty minute drive from Queenstown. Lovingly restored heritage stone and timber buildings line the main street, housing galleries, shops and boutique accommodation. The mature sycamores and oaks shading its streets offer an ever-changing palette, notably in mid-April, when Arrowtown celebrates its Autumn Festival. Beside the river, Ramshore Lane’s cafes include some very fine eateries, while further along, at the junction of the Arrow River and Bush Creek, the restored and preserved shacks of the Chinese Mining Settlement are perfect for an afternoon ramble. The award-winning Lakes District Museum, in the centre of town, includes several heritage buildings in its complex, including the former Arrowtown goldfields jail. Hidden just off the main street, Dorothy Brown’s Cinema and Bar is a plush two-cinema complex offering movie-goers a great range of mainstream and art-house movies. For those wanting to take a break from driving, a regular bus service runs between Arrowtown and Queenstown, with day passes offering a hop-on, hop-off sight-seeing option. Vineyard tours, horse treks, mountain biking, gold-panning, golf and trout fishing figure highly on the list of local summer activities, and in winter, the nearby ski fields at Coronet Peak, Cardrona and the Remarkables are within easy driving distance.
