MOTUEKA
For many years, Motueka was the watering hole of scores of itinerant orchard workers, a melting pot of youthful travellers from around the globe experiencing life on the land in New Zealand.  For most, this was paradise, and many stayed or returned years later to make their homes in the Nelson region.  The apple orchards they worked on have largely disappeared, replaced by the more profitable vineyards and kiwifruit orchards which commonly dot the land now, but the strange mix of funky and rural New Zealand persists along the streets of Motueka, the rural supply shops and roadside produce stalls sitting comfortably beside the arty shops and cafes.  Motueka still entertains visitors from afar, but these days they’re more likely to be on their way to kayak along the shores of the Abel Tasman National Park or climb the heights of the Kahurangi National Park.
