Perched atop the sandspit which stretches north from the Port of Tauranga to Mt Maunganui (Mauao), the beach-front apartment towers and sidewalk cafes of The Mount, as it is affectionately known, are the urbane holiday-maker’s dream come true. The heaped golden sands of Mount Beach are rimmed by a wide Norfolk pine shaded board-walk, while the town’s flower adorned main street, one block away, is home to numerous retail outlets parading an impressive array of surf and street-wear labels. In stark contrast, Mauao itself is home to grazing sheep, and is traced with a network of walking tracks which encircle and climb it, where walkers can watch as hang-gliders launch from its heights. For the energetic, the one hour climb to the summit affords magnificent views up and down the coast. On the harbour side of this two-block wide peninsula, Pilot Bay’s safe swimming beach draws families to its protected waters, as do the hot saltwater pools at the base of the mountain. Opening directly onto Mount Beach, the local campground, lined most of the year with campervans and caravans, is undoubtedly one of the best, though busiest, campground locations in New Zealand
