Waiheke Island

The perfect way to enjoy the Waitemata Harbour is to visit Waiheke Island, a 35 minute ferry ride from Auckland CBD.  The trip passes the islands of the Inner Gulf, including the iconic Rangitoto Island, and some sailings make a brief stop to collect/offload passengers at Devonport.  The rolling hills and vineyards of the sun-soaked island, its beaches and its proximity to Auckland City, have all made Waiheke a very popular place to live – the packed early-morning ferries smell wonderfully of fresh coffee as commuters greet the start of their working day.  Over the summer holidays, the beaches can be packed with holiday-makers and the cafes overflowing, as the Island takes on its summer persona.  Outside the main holiday season, it’s more laid-back, though there’s still plenty going on.  Swimming, snorkeling, sea kayaking, mountain biking and walking on the island’s beaches and tracks are high on the list for visitors, while bus tours visit the vineyards and take in the sights.  Festivals on Waiheke attract large crowds.  The most popular are ‘Jazz and Blues in the Vines’, held every October, and ‘Sculpture on the Gulf’, held biennially, a large scale sculpture display along the 2 km coastal track near Matiatia Bay.
