The North Shore maritime suburb of Devonport, a ten minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, is one of Auckland’s historic strongholds. Defined by the twin mounds of Mt Victoria (Takarunga) and North Head (Takapuna), the peninsula, though linked inextricably with Auckland, has retained its own identity. In the newly settled Auckland of the 1840’s, a signal station on Mt Victoria advised the impending arrival of ships into the Harbour to the main settlement on the Harbour’s southern shores. Around the same time, the Devonport Naval Base was established, and its continued association with the suburb, including a Naval Museum, also lends character to the area. From the ashes of a fire which destroyed buildings in the village centre in the 1880’s, two of Devonport’s landmark buildings emerged – the waterfront Esplanade Hotel, and N.Z.’s oldest surviving purpose-built movie theatre, the re-vamped Victoria Picture Palace. Today, Devonport’s charmingly restored kauri villas and gardens draw visitors who come by ferry to walk the heritage trail, which follows the foreshore, headland, and beaches, affording views south to the city and north and east to the Gulf and its islands, or to enjoy lunch at one of the local cafes.
