Auckland city rests alongside the Waitemata Harbour, the luckiest of its high-rise offices, apartments and hotels taking in views of the sun-soaked waters of the Harbour and the islands of the Gulf. Downtown, waterfront restaurants and cafes line the Viaduct Harbour and Princes Wharf, and nearby, the Britomart Transport Hub at the bottom of Queen St amalgamates suburban bus, ferry and train services. Hidden gems such as Vulcan Lane, the Chancery, and Lorne St surround Queen St, where eateries vie for position with galleries and boutique designer stores. Nearby, Albert Park sits on the ridge above the CBD, its sunny position, formal flower gardens and fountain a lunchtime drawcard for city workers and students from the adjacent university. Staying in the middle of New Zealand’s largest city does not preclude a trip to the markets. Fresh produce abounds at the weekly City Farmers Market and Parnell’s La Cigale French style Market, and fresh seafood is just a free shuttle ride away at the Auckland Fish Market.
